Data Centres and HVO Fuel

The Road to Net Zero Data Centres: Reducing Emissions by Transitioning to HVO Fuel

In July 2021 Kao Data became the first data centre operator in Europe to transition all their back-up generators to HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel in place of traditional diesel.

HVO fuel eliminates up to 90% of net CO2 and significantly reduces harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxide, particulate matter and carbon monoxide.

Find out how Kao Data's pioneering approach demonstrates the potential for data centre operators globally to further reduce their CO2 emissions in the pursuit of Net Zero operations.

Why HVO Fuel?

Clean - HVO fuel is dramatically better for the environment compared to traditional diesel. It is 100% renewable, biodegradable, sustainable and nontoxic.

Reliable – HVO fuel is more reliable and resilient in operation, can be operated at a range of climates and temperatures, is easier to store, and has a lifespan of 10+ years.

Cost Effective – HVO fuel is easy to transition and requires no expensive modifications to generator equipment. It's also more fuel efficient than traditional diesel.
