Kao Data Shortlisted for Design Team of the Year Category in DCD Awards 2018
Once again, Kao Data is proud to announce the company has been shortlisted for a major industry award. This time, it is the team that brought the data centre campus from idea to reality that is receiving industry recognition. Paul Finch, COO at Kao Data says, “We’re delighted to be shortlisted and are hoping to do better than be a bridesmaid at the DatacenterDynamics Awards event in December.”
Looking to avoid the cost and program over-runs which are typical in any construction project, and to ensure the technical aspects of the project were the main focus, Kao Data took the step to appoint JCA Engineering, a leading provider of building engineering services (M&E), to act as Principal Contractor. Thereafter, a first-class team was brought together comprising experts in data centre development and operations, all sharing a common vision of what constitutes an industry-leading data centre campus.
The Kao Data design team included experts in ‘designing for availability and efficiency’ and have introduced a range of innovative systems that combine to radically reduce the mechanical complexity of the data centre, increasing energy efficiency, reducing maintenance requirements and increasing the system reliability.
- Indirect Evaporative Cooling – Kao Data eliminates the requirement for mechanical cooling. It is estimated that standard mechanical refrigeration for this site would increase the energy requirement by up to 25 percent (i.e., enough to power another data center).
- Gaseous Contamination – Kao’s innovative approach is the first time a wholesale data center developer has incorporated this level of measurement, analysis and control into the design of a project. The facilities are designed to be compliant with all major server manufacturers’ warranty requirements. Eliminating contamination within the white space provides the optimum environment for IT server performance and reliability.
In addition, a collaborative partnership approach has been adopted with the effect that this highly transparent and beneficial working environment has ensured that major design, construction and budget milestones were exceeded throughout the construction period. Kao Data London One – the first of four data centres on the Kao Data Campus – went operational on time and on budget in January 2018. The facility has been favourably received, with tenants already taking up space.
The DCD Awards ceremony takes place at a Gala Dinner on the 6th December, for more details or to book a table to celebrate with us, please visit https://www.dcdawards.global/
