The Coming Home Project

The Coming Home Project is a transformative initiative aimed at empowering women leaving prison to reintegrate into society successfully. Founded by a former inmate with lived experience, the project addresses barriers such as unemployment, unstable housing, and unresolved trauma, which contribute to high reoffending rates among women. Through trauma-informed workshops, peer mentorship, and practical support, the project equips participants with essential skills, stable housing, and employment opportunities, fostering community cohesion and reducing reoffending.

Coming Home

What will the Kao SEED Fund support?

The funding will be used to purchase refurbished digital devices and support the delivery of a 4-day workshop for 12 women. The funding will cover costs such as venue hire, workshop materials, facilitator fees, refreshments, and participant travel expenses. These resources will enable interactive digital literacy sessions, helping women develop essential skills for employment and modern life.

Who is the project helping support?

The project supports women in Stockport leaving the justice system, focusing on approximately 75 women annually. It helps them overcome challenges like unemployment, homelessness, and digital exclusion by providing tailored workshops on digital literacy, employability, emotional resilience, and reframing past experiences. The ripple effects extend to families, local businesses and the wider community, promoting family stability, creating a job-ready workforce, and improving community safety.

Impact of the project

The project aims to achieve measurable outcomes, including stable employment, housing, financial independence, improved confidence, and reduced reoffending rates among participants. Community impacts include safer neighbourhoods, economic growth through a skilled workforce, and reduced stigma around ex-offenders. Success will be tracked through wellness metrics, employment data, reoffending rates, participant feedback, and community impact reporting, ensuring both individual and societal benefits.
