Sustainability & ESG

Sustainability

From its inception, Kao Data’s leadership team has been committed to developing and operating one of the UK’s most sustainable and energy efficient data centre portfolios.

This ambition included a number of technical design and engineering “firsts” that were incorporated into the structure and operations of our Harlow data centres, in addition to being the first operator in Europe to transition back-up generators to sustainable HVO fuel.

Our corporate aim - as outlined in our comprehensive Sustainability & ESG Report 2024-25 - is to be fully net-zero by 2030.

Our Pathway to Net Zero...

Portrait of Matthew Harris, CFO of Kao Data

Every electron of energy Kao Data consumes is matched by new, renewable capacity generated, uniquely, at a specific UK asset. While we’re still using the REGO certificated system, we’re removing the uncertainty as to the source and validity of this green energy, by ensuring all our power is matched by genuine, renewable energy - generated here in the UK.

ESG: Kao Academy

In an effort to engage young people in the world of data centres, Kao Data established the Kao Academy in May 2022. This syllabus-aligned STEM learning resource was set up to o provide primary schools across the UK with curriculum-based lesson plans for Upper Key Stage 2 (age 9-11), which explain what data centres are, how they underpin our modern lives and what types of jobs will be in demand in the future.  Since then, hundreds of teachers and children have accessed the website in support of their STEM education.

The Kao Academy was recognised at the Open Compute Awards in 2023. The fun and creative resources also include games, puzzles and an annual Data Super Hero competition for pupils.
