Re:dish

Re:dish, established 11 years ago, is a community-focused organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and improving the wellbeing of local residents. The organisation provides a range of services, including a foodbank, peer support groups, and wellbeing activities, reaching approximately 180 people weekly. Their initiatives support various community needs, such as dementia care, youth engagement, and long-term illness support. Re:dish also runs a low-cost supermarket, offering fresh food to local members, while connecting people to additional support services. Through these efforts, Re:dish fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment within the community.

What will the Kao SEED Fund support?

The Kao SEED funding will support Re:dish’s "Tote-ally Re:dish" project by providing the necessary printing press equipment and materials to produce branded reusable shopping bags. These bags will help address a shortfall in strong bags for the charity’s foodbank, shop, and social supermarket, while also promoting the importance of recycling and reusing. The project will engage the community, particularly the Crafty Women group, in designing and producing the bags. Additionally, the bags will be used to promote Re:dish’s mission at events and will be available for sale. The equipment will also be shared with other local organisations, fostering collaboration and resource sharing across the community.

Who is the project helping support?

The reusable bags will benefit users of Re:dish’s foodbank, social supermarket, and charity shop, with approximately 70 people per week receiving support. First-time clients will particularly benefit, as they often need bags to carry the food home, especially when using public transport or walking. Additionally, the project will encourage sustainability by inviting clients to bring back the bags for future visits. Other local community groups will also benefit from the project, as they can access the equipment to produce small quantities of materials cost-effectively, promoting collaboration and resource sharing in the area.

This funding will allow us to buy a printing machine to print our own reusable tote bags for people coming to our food banks and social supermarket to use. The tote bags will also be brilliant for promoting our services too, as well as being more environmentally friendly than plastic bags. We’re so grateful to the Kao SEED Fund for helping us with the funding pot.

Impact of the project

This project will reduce plastic bag use, encourage clients to return with Re:dish bags, and involve our wellbeing groups in their design and production. It will raise awareness of Re:dish in the community, help local groups create cost-effective materials, and expand our product range with tote bags for sale in the charity shop.
