Reddish Men in Sheds (RMiS), founded in 2014 and part of the UK Men's Sheds Association, brings older men together through shared practical activity and social connection. Meeting three times a week in a dedicated Reddish workshop, members repair donated bikes, promoting sustainability and affordable exercise. The project tackles loneliness and poor health by offering purpose and companionship to men over 50, many of whom face isolation, bereavement, or limited social opportunities.
The Kao SEED Fund will enable Reddish Men in Sheds to expand The Big Bike Giveaway, a growing project that refurbishes and distributes donated bicycles to those who may not otherwise afford them. The support will cover the cost of tools, parts, and safety checks needed to restore bikes to a high standard, allowing the group to meet rising demand from local schools and community organisations. This will help more children and families experience the health, environmental, and social benefits of cycling, while also reducing waste.
The Big Bike Giveaway supports a wide range of people across Stockport, including children, families, young people, refugees, individuals with additional needs, and those facing financial hardship. Around 70 bikes are expected to be donated each year, with some going directly to schools for shared use, while others are given to individuals who need a reliable way to access education, work, or essential services. Families benefit from reduced transport costs, young people gain greater independence, and adults improve their job prospects. Specially adapted bikes are also provided for children with physical or cognitive challenges, helping them enjoy the benefits of cycling safely. At the heart of the project are the 15 older men from Reddish Men in Sheds, who find connection, purpose, and improved wellbeing by repairing and preparing bikes for meaningful use across the community.
The Big Bike Giveaway aims to make a significant impact by providing bikes to individuals and families who need them most. As demand increases, the project will help more people access transportation, gain independence, and improve their physical and mental well-being. With ongoing support from local organisations and volunteers, the project is set to expand its reach, helping those facing financial hardship, as well as young people and families. The feedback from recipients will guide the project’s future growth, ensuring that it continues to create positive change within the community.
