Building Tomorrow’s Workforce

When I first entered the data centre industry a year ago, it wasn't through a traditional route. I don’t have a technical degree or years of experience in the sector. In fact, if I’m being completely honest, I knew very little about data centres—let alone that my role even existed. Yet, over the past year, I can confidently say that the data centre industry is the perfect fit for me, and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it.

Since joining Kao Data, I’ve had the privilege of travelling across the UK and beyond, meeting a diverse range of people and working on exciting projects. Highlights include planning our Data-Empowered Futures for All launch event in Greater Manchester, hosting rooftop drinks in Cannes overlooking the Mediterranean, organising panel discussions at the Labour Party Conference, and even welcoming Andy Burnham for the groundbreaking of our newest data centre in Stockport. It’s been an incredible journey, and what I love most is that no two days are ever the same. Above all, I’m proud to represent a company that is not only a leader in high-performance colocation but also operates with integrity and strives to make a positive impact wherever we go.

This is why I’m particularly passionate about Kao Data’s recent partnership with GeN+1, an initiative designed to introduce young people—and those young at heart—to the data centre industry. My own non-traditional path has made me acutely aware of the barriers many young people face, especially those who may not see a clear route into this field or, like I once did, don’t even know it exists. Together with GeN+1, I am committed to building awareness of the incredible opportunities available to people just like me.

GeN+1 aims to create a welcoming environment where individuals can connect and build their networks in relaxed, fun, and social settings. By collaborating with partners and sponsors, GeN+1 engages a diverse community, empowering the next generation with the confidence to support one another and thrive in their careers.

Data centres might not be the first choice for many young people when considering their career options. It’s not often you hear someone say, “I want to work in a data centre when I grow up.” But why not? These facilities power everything from the internet to AI, enabling the technologies that shape our modern world. Unfortunately, there’s a perception problem, which is where projects like GeN+1 come in.

My previous ignorance highlights the need to raise awareness about the opportunities available within our industry. Through initiatives like these, we can inspire the next generation by showcasing the exciting, innovative, and impactful roles available in data centres. It’s essential to help people understand that this field is not just about hardware or engineering; it’s about solving tomorrow’s challenges, from sustainability to global connectivity.

Currently, the data centre industry is facing a skills shortage that threatens its ability to meet the growing global demand for digital services. While there’s a particular need for individuals with technical expertise, there is also a demand for those with transferable skills such as negotiation, problem-solving, and communication. To ensure sustainable growth, we must attract new talent from diverse backgrounds, including those who may not initially consider careers in data centres.

Our support of GeN+1 reflects the natural evolution of our commitment to engaging the younger generation. Kao Data is already involved in various initiatives, such as the Kao Academy and UTC Heathrow’s Digital Futures Programme, which aim to engage young people early in their educational journeys. We believe in proactively reaching out and providing clear, accessible pathways into the industry rather than waiting for talent to find its way to us.

At Kao Data, we recognise that fostering innovation requires a diverse workforce that brings together different perspectives, experiences, and ideas. Diversity isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s critical to our future success. This is why our partnership with GeN+1 is focused on creating an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of background, feels welcome and can thrive.

Our industry is at a pivotal moment. The need for skilled professionals is growing, and the potential for innovation is immense. By partnering with GeN+1, Kao Data is helping ensure that the next generation is engaged and ready to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. Personally, this partnership resonates with me because I see immense potential in the young people we’ll be working with, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them—and for the industry.

At Kao Data, we are not just passionate about building data centres; we are also dedicated to cultivating tomorrow’s workforce. Through our collaboration with partners, we are ensuring that the data centre industry is diverse, inclusive, and prepared to face the future. And that’s something we can all be proud of.
