Harlow Hospital Radio is a volunteer-run station broadcasting 24/7 to patients and staff at Princess Alexandra Hospital, as well as online and via smart speakers to families and the wider community.
The Studio Refurbishment project will renew ageing studio infrastructure to secure a reliable, modern service over the next decade while the new hospital build is delayed. The funding will contribute to replacing and upgrading key studio and outside broadcast equipment to modern standards, supporting digital music use and live external events. This includes updating life‑expired playback kit and adding flexible, portable devices that enable live broadcasting from community activities across Harlow, Essex and East Herts.
The project supports inpatients and outpatients across around 400 hospital beds and day units at Princess Alexandra Hospital, alongside approximately 4,500 staff members. It also benefits patients’ and staff families locally and worldwide via online streaming, reflecting a truly international audience drawn from staff originating from over 70 countries.
The upgraded studio will help maintain a continuous 24‑hour service for at least the next ten years, despite delays to the new hospital. It aims to enhance patient experience, strengthen relationships with hospital staff and partners, grow audience engagement through web and social channels, and develop Harlow Hospital Radio’s role as Harlow’s own community-focused station.
