Plant Pots and Wellies is a thriving community project that provides safe opportunities for learning new skills, increasing mobility, whilst socialising, meeting people and being part of a community, for children and adults with additional needs.
Under the Bright Futures project, the organisation wants to improve its outdoor community space so more people can take part in activities year-round. Current sessions include gardening, carpentry, crafts, animal care, Dungeons & Dragons, lectures and social events, which help participants build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.
The Kao SEED Fund will pay for the design, supply and installation of an off-grid solar energy and storage system to power the second cabin on site.Â
The project supports children and adults with a wide range of additional needs, including people with physical disabilities, learning and developmental challenges, neurological conditions such as dementia and autism, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression. It also benefits carers, families and volunteers who attend, participate in or help deliver activities. Everyone using Plant Pots & Wellies’ services will gain from the improved, fully powered cabins, including those seeking social contact, purposeful activity and a supportive community environment.
The project will create a brighter, warmer and more flexible environment where people can connect, learn and take part in meaningful activities regardless of season or daylight. This is expected to boost confidence, reduce isolation and support emotional wellbeing for people with additional needs and their carers. At community level, more reliable, year-round provision will strengthen relationships, increase volunteering and foster an inclusive, sustainable space where people feel valued and able to contribute.
