Shell Energy renews deal with Kao Data, helping to power the UK’s AI ambitions with renewable electricity

[London, UK – 01/07/2026] – Shell Energy UK Limited has signed a renewable electricity supply agreement, with Kao Data, extending its relationship with the specialist developer and operator of data centres which are engineered for AI and advanced computing. The agreement highlights a shared focus on supporting the sustainable growth of the digital economy. 

Since 2022, Shell Energy has supplied Kao Data with around 140 gigawatt hours of electricity each year, matched with generation from UK-based renewable assets1. From 2025, this has included initial output from Dogger Bank2, one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms currently under construction, from which Shell Energy Europe offtakes around 20% of the total output. 

“At Kao Data, sustainability is embedded in everything we do and developing strategic relationships remains critical to help us achieve our goals,” said James Lewis, Investment Director at Kao Data. “Our collaboration with Shell Energy has been instrumental in shaping our long-term energy management and decarbonisation strategy. Extending this relationship enables our customers’ electricity demand to be matched with certified renewable generation from UK-based sources, reinforcing our commitment to become carbon-neutral by 2030.” 

Kao Data’s facilities are designed for AI and advanced computing, leveraging advanced cooling technologies, including direct-to-chip liquid cooling and matching all energy consumed with UK-based renewable generation. The company was also the first in Europe to transition its backup power systems to run on hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel, reducing lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional diesel.3

If your application is successful, Harlow Council will transfer the grant by BACS.  Bank details (account name, number and sort code) will need to be supplied with a summary of accounts. 

Funding conditions:  If your application is successful, your project must be delivered by 31 December 2026. You will have to return any grant funds if the project is not delivered or the organisation receiving the funding stops operating.

A contract agreement will need to be signed between your organisation and Harlow District Council before any funding is granted.

Monitoring and Evaluation: Grant recipients will be required to provide an end of project report to establish whether the project has met its aims and objectives, as well as to assess the overall impact on participants. Funding for the project is provided on the basis that the Project Evaluation form is returned within the agreed project timescale (no later than 31 January 2027).

Risks and Liabilities: In giving grants the ‘Harlow Council’ will require the supported project organisation or groups to accept all risks and liabilities associated with the activity being supported. This will be a condition of the grant.  Copies of relevant documents may need to be provided if the application has been approved.
